Doxycycline Information
What is Doxycycline?
This is one of the tetracycline antibiotics. When first launched, these were “broad-spectrum” but, over time, more bacteria have developed resistance. So, now, Doxycycline must be targeted more precisely. Vulnerable bacteria will be killed by your immune system. If you have been infected by bacteria not vulnerable to Doxycycline, taking it will have no effect.
Can everyone take Doxycycline?
Doxycycline affects bone density and the rate of growth in children under the age of 8 years. Because it also discolors teeth, older children and teens should only take a small dose for short periods of time. Some adults will have allergies to antibiotics, and a lower dosage will be necessary if you have kidney or liver disease. You should also discuss the use of this drug if you have asthma. For women, Doxycycline can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Further, it can cause damage to the fetus if you take it during pregnancy and, because it passes into breast milk, do not breastfeed your baby.
Dosage
Take the full course of treatment given to you. If you stop because you feel better, this can encourage resistance in the remaining bacteria. The next time you fall ill, those bacteria will not respond to Doxycycline. Swallow the pills whole with plenty of water. It is better to avoid dairy products or any other food or drink with a high calcium content. This can slow down the absorption of the drug into your bloodstream. Should you forget to take a dose, do not double the dose the next time. If you have any Doxycycline left over, do not use it again if it has passed its expiration date.
What interactions may occur?
It is important not to take any multivitamins, iron or calcium supplements, or to use an antacid. Do not take any medication for the treatment of acne based on vitamin A. There will also be problems if you take different antibiotics at the same time, particularly if derived from penicillin.
What are the side effects?
Diarrhea is a consistent problem with any antibiotic. If this affects you, do not take any other drug to prevent it unless this is specifically approved by your doctor. Also, this problem can continue for some time after you have stopped taking Doxycycline. This can be a sign of a different infection and you should get advice before trying to treat it yourself.
Doxycycline can also make your skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light so wear sunscreen in bright sunlight and do not use a sunbed or other tanning device. |
